Mission Statement
The mission of our department is to provide excellent education, scientific research and scientific and clinical services in the field of reproduction and obstetrics, herd health, veterinary epidemiology, veterinary legislation and practice management. For this we strive to combine both theoretical knowledge and fundamental research with practical education and applied research. Our department is characterized by the high degree of interaction and integration between the different sub disciplines and by the extensive multidisciplinary collaboration in education and research with many different departments.

- 7 January 2010: Announcement: CNS Seminar 21 & 22 April 2010
As part of this Francqui Chair of Prof. Ynte-Hein Schukken we have decided to organise a seminar on the role of CNS in bovine mastitis. This seminar will offer a discussion forum for researchers working in the field of CNS with a focus on their role in bovine mastitis. It could be seen as a sequel to the pre-conference seminar on CNS during the "Heifer mastitis conference 2007". People working on CNS in other species and in the area of antimicrobial resistance (MRCNS in animals), are encouraged to attend as well.
The seminar will be take place during 21 (13-19h) and 22 (9-14h) April in the beautiful old city Ghent, Belgium, and wants to be informal and low cost. First announcement can be seen here.

Op 17 december aanstaande zal Herman Barkema, professor aan de Faculteiten diergeneeskunde en geneeskunde van de Universiteit van Calgary (Canada) en gastprofessor aan de Vakgroep voortplanting, verloskunde en bedrijfsdiergeneeskunde van de Faculteit diergeneeskunde (UGent) een voordracht geven over de potentiële link tussen paratuberculose bij runderen en de ziekte van Crohn bij de mens. - 16 November 2009: Ynte-Hein Schukken appointed holder of the Francqui Chair at Ghent University, Belgium.
The Francqui Foundation was founded in 1932 in Belgium to promote the development of higher education and scientific research in Belgium and to encourage interuniversity collaboration.
The Department of Reproduction, Obstetrics and Herd Health of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium has proposed Ynte-Hein Schukken (Professor of Epidemiology and Herd Health at Cornell University and Director of Quality Milk Production Services) to be holder of the Francqui Chair for 2009-2010 and is happy to report Dr. Schukken’s candidacy was accepted based on his outstanding scientific achievements. Ynte-Hein Schukken will give several lectures on epidemiology and mastitis at Ghent University. As well, a seminar will be organised on the role of coagulase-negative staphylococci in bovine mastitis. More information will be available soon.
